Popular Websites For Social Network Marketing

There are many different social networking sites catering to a broad range of target menberships from very specific professional target groups to those with a student focus, to those with very broad target groups. Before deciding to use social networking groups for marketing first research whether the social network is a real target market for your products, services or business opportunity.

Below are probably the three most popular social networking websites but a quick search of Wikipedia will show a list of hundreds. You might find a smaller or more focussed group better suited to your business.

FaceBook

FaceBook is a social networking website which has been around since 2004. Anyone over the age of thirteen can join FaceBook and it is definitely one of the biggest and most popular sites. Many social network marketers prefer FaceBook because it appears more family oriented but it does have a very broad spectrum of members.

MySpace

MySpace began in 2003 and has a loyal following of people who have been with MySpace since the beginning. You can set up your own personal profile upon signing up, add photos as well as business and school information. Some say that one problem with social network marketing on MySpace is that there is already too much marketing spam on MySpace.

Twitter

Twitter is one of the newest social networking websites. Twitters utilize “Tweets” which are similar to “instant messages”. For businesses purposes and marketing purposes, you can send out a “Tweet” for instance when you make a new post to your blog page. Internet users who visit your blog page will be able to view what you have been working on while paying a visit to your new post.

You will of course have your new post linked to your main website. As usual it is the quality of your post which is important, rather than quantity.

Social Networking Can Damage Your Business Health!

Social network marketing is definitely a great opportunity for you to promote your business through your business website. It allows you as the business website owner to expand your MLM or Network Marketing businesses to enormous numbers of prospective customers.

However, if not performed correctly social networking can seriously damage your business health!

Social Networking

Whereas network marketing through the medium of social networking is a great opportunity it is important to understand that there are many things which could go drastically wrong.

Social networking, as the name suggests, is primarily for the purposes of expanding the individual’s social network, for building friendships and sharing information. Network marketing should not be seen to be your prime purpose for joining a social network.

MLM – Old Style!

Think back to the 80’s or 90’s style Multi Level Marketing (MLM), making a list of family and friends and hitting them with your business opportunity or invitation to your group meeting. It was in this way that some years back I was introduced to Amway by a friend and persuaded to attend a small group meeting. It didnt work out for me for reasons I won’t go into but I spent weeks avoiding the follow up pressure sell and found out later that a large number of other people in my friends social network were doing likewise.

His social network evaporated and that is exactly what will happen if you blast your online social network with pressure sell. Probably much faster now than in the 80’s or 90’s.

Social networking means getting involved in the network, utilizing social networking marketing requires that you as a business website owner must become involved within particular social networking communities. You must contribute and communicate with people within that network and must ensure that your internet friends are interested in your products and services.

Publish great and relevant content

You must publish information on your business website about the products and services offerd by your business. The content will need to be informative as well as relevant. Do not ever deceive your customers by not telling the truth about your products and services only to lure them to your business website.

For example. Do not be dishonest in the published content on your business website. Do not leave post or blogs recommending your products or services while disguising yourself as a customer.

Be honest with your customers.

Do explain how valuable your products and services can be to your customers. If you perform MLM methods which are dishonorable your customers will eventually find your techniques unethical and this will harm your reputation as a business website owner.

Social First, Marketing Second

Social network marketing requires a lot of patience and its no coincidence that the phrase is social network marketing. The social network must come first. Your social network must get to know you, you must impress your network with your online presence, your contributions, you are sociable, helpful, offering advice when asked, you are part of the team.

As you establish your presence within the social network you will attract like minded members interested in your product, services or opportunity, and through your guidence word spreads and the network marketing gains pace through each members own network.

Farming Social Networks

I often use the phrase “harvesting” when earning credits from traffic exchanges or safelist emails, but harvesting suggests that some effort actually went into earning those credits.

The first thing a farmer does is not harvest. He invests in seed, water, fertilizer, labor, time and helped by suitable weather nurtures the product that eventually he harvests.

Social network marketing is very much like this. It requires time and patience. It requires a soft sell approach but the opportunity is massive because of the nature of the beast. It is a network and once word spreads the numbers grow. By nurturing your social network you will harvest success.

Junk Mail Is Not Marketing

Have you ever had one of those irritating phone calls, you know the one where they greet you buy your first name as if they’ve known you since childhood and just want to introduce you to their company and oh, by the way, can we sell you …..!

I was on one of my regular trips to China a couple of days ago. I like to take the ferry rather than the train as its usually a relaxing way to travel but not long after I boarded my phone rang. Hello Dave, this is Mary from bla bla bla in Japan, how are you today … I’m not trying to sell you anything (yeh! like right!) but I just wanted to introduce you to my company (why?) … that was about as far as she got but a couple of minutes later she rang again! The ferry ride is an hour and there were five or six calls but the rest I switched to silent and ignored.

I got to my destination and the phone rang again. This time the same woman was asking for someone else! Now this is just desperation.

What made her think the more she called the better her chances of her selling me something? I was not looking for what she was selling and would definitely not spend my hard earned cash on something from someone calling out the blue like that!

On the return journey I was thinking about the days calls and it hit me that junk phone calls are no different from junk email. There is even less chance that I would buy somethng from someone sending me unsolicited email than had that person irritated me with unwanted phone calls!

But lets look at this logically. Why are spam filters such big business? Why do companies invest in development spam filters, why do agencies go to such lengths to close down spammers? Its simple. Stopping spammers is big business and to be big business demands a big customer base … in other words that are masses of people willing to spend hard earned cash to stop other people sending them unsolicited email!

Why do people continue to think that sending out hundreds of junk emails will generate business for them? All spammers do is driver email account holders into the arms of those selling spam filters!

If the spammers of the world want to generate business there is only one way, attract customers, not repel them.

Ethics And Social Network Marketing

Business website owners must maintain integrity. Unfortunately too many of the social networking websites are utilized for unethical behavior by business website owners and this seriously backfires when trying to market products and services.

Respect online users privacy

Always keep in mind that while using social networking as your marketing tool for your products and services that you are joining an actual community of internet users. With any community, your business has its particular place in the scheme of things but this is not room for you to invade people’s privacy within the online community. Do not spam market your friends on your friends list.

There are many social networking websites to choose from for your social networking strategies

Many social network marketers utilize online websites such as MySpace and FaceBook with the hopes of driving internet traffic to their business websites. This is very much ethical however; spamming internet users with images or links in order to lure them to your business website is unethical and will eventually get you dropped by Google or other search engines.

Do not spam people with marketing ads for your business website

Social networking websites are currently more knowledgeable of spamming practices, which have proved unethical while eliminating people who habitually perform such tactics within their marketing strategies.

Be professional and honest with the online communities.

To successfully utilize social networking websites as tools with integrity you need to honestly participate within the online communities as a member. Becoming a member of the online community means you will have to register with that particular community. Become involved within the online groups, which are related to your area of expertise or products and services, which your business offers. You want to make friends within this online community while proving yourself an expert within the particular field, which you are offering products and services.

Publish quality content on the social networking website

You will need to publish quality content upon these particular social networking websites. Avoid shoving your products and services down the throats of the online community. Never mislead or give incorrect information referencing your products and services.

Examples of unethical social networking practices.

A great example of such unethical practices is leaving a blog or post within the online community while pretending to be a customer recommending your products and services. You need to be honest with the online community, which you belong to explaining your products and services. Leave the decision up to the online community to view your products and services as compared to spamming them with your company information.

Do not criticize your competitors. Do not point out shortcomings of your competitors. You can however, specify what makes your products and services different from the competition.

There are no set guidelines on ethical practices with online social network marketing however; you will need to educate yourself with media law while knowing the potential dangers of defamation as well as invading people’s privacy. Conduct yourself professionally as well as intellectually. If you follow these guidelines of what not to perform, you should fare well in your goal of becoming a success.

Designing Your Social Network Marketing Website

It isnt always obvious to budding online marketers that one of the most important aspects of their online business is their website. When building an online business website, you want a particular website that will work for you and your business.  You will want a website, which is attractive, as this will draw in internet visitors but the website needs to reflect the type of business being promoted, it must be functional and must be easy to navigate around.

Create an idea for your website

You will need to come up with a great idea for the website design and dont be afraid to brainstorm ideas. Your first idea may not be the best but keep in mind that your customers first impressions are the most important. You can play around with some sketches while arranging the designs as you want.  Keep in mind that you must focus on practicality and logical reasoning when you attempt to institute your design.

But don’t get so hung up on creating an award winning design at the expense of actually doing any business. You need to know when to call it a day and start promoting your business. Remember, a website is not cast in stone. It can be changed.

If in doubt about your website creation skills maybe you should consider hiring a web design company or an independent web designer to institute your plans for your website.  You will want a website designer who specializes in social networking websites.  You want a website designer who is experienced and not someone who lacks training for such venture.  You want to keep the communication open and you want your website designer to be accessible to you during this project.  I would recommend that you and your website designer speak over the telephone as compared to email or chat messaging this will ensure that you are on the same level and that you both understand of what is occurring referencing your website.

Project proposals

You should ask for a project proposal for approval from the website designer.  This is a great idea, which will produce what the website designer wants to perform with your social networking website.  The proposal will also create the timeframe which for the project to be completed.

Stay on top of the project

You will want to remain on top of the project for your website.  Do not be too pushy or demanding while ensuring that you communicate precisely what you want referencing your website design as well as generally.

Ensure that you can make additions and upgrades in the future on your website. The coding and software, which the website designer utilizes, should be the type, which can be extended or expanded upon, this, will ensure that later on down the road you can add improvements or upgrades and this will ensure the whole project of your website will not have to be redone.

When you are working with a web design company or an independent website designer, you will need to ensure that a non-disclosure agreement will be signed by both parties involved to ensure the project as well as the concept of the project is protected.

Don’t forget, you are doing this to make money and not to create the world’s most amazing website. Make sure you know when to say enough is enough and start promoting your site.

Creating Free Strategies For Social Network Marketing

Why do people strive to make money online? At one end of the scale there are those who want to complely change their lives, to have complete financial control, to work from home, spend time with their families and put an end to financial worries … but for the majority looking to earn a little extra online its because they are struggling to meet ends meet with their full time jobs.

Its ironic therefore that many online gurus talk about setting budgets, because for the majority trying to break into online network marketing budget is the big issue. This is why many fall into the trap of chasing the quick-buck scams or wasting what little cash is available on poor quality advertising.

The good news is that social network marketing utilizes strategies which are free!

You can first begin with article marketing.  Writing articles is a wonderful way to put your products and services out there for internet users within online communities.  You can utilize Google to find numerous articles directories, which you can submit to.  Make sure you do not try to add identical articles to numerous directories.  Ensure that each article you submit is copyscape free as well as unique material.

Blogging is a wonderful way to inform internet users about your products and services.  You can utilize blogging for your business marketing needs.  Try creating different blogs that contain network marketing tips as well as one for your business website.

A personal blog is great to have as well.  You can brand not only your products and services but also yourself.  You want to sell yourself first before you begin to sell your products and services.  You will want your blog to contain interesting information, as this will enable you to stand out from the crowd.

Utilize social networking websites for your network marketing demands.  Twitter and MySpace are wonderful social networking websites, which offer many features and benefits for anyone who wants to market their products and services.

Do not add numerous friends’ right too quickly for this could enable you to get your profile or account disabled or possibly even banned by the social networking website.  Make sure you educate yourself on the rules and regulations upon the social networking websites.

You can try video marketing for promoting your products and services.  YouTube receives millions of visitors daily.  There are many other video sharing websites, which you can post your unique content.

Numerous forums, which you can join, are network focused.  Network marketing forums can provide you with communities, which are geared toward your particular niche.  You can utilize your blog URL or the URL for your lead capture page with your signature line to direct people back to your business website.

Network marketing forums are very helpful to internet users and can teach you how to add effective content to your web page while allowing internet visitors to click on your business links.

You need to display your talents.  Some people enjoy writing while other internet users enjoy talking.  Video marketing might suit you more than writing articles.  The most important factor is to select which strategies, which not only work for you but your business.

The above examples are relatively free and will cost you nothing but your time.  You can create wonderful results for your network marketing demands if you are persistent and focused on a regular basis.

What Can Social Network Marketing Do For You?

When network marketers ask “How can you make money off social networks?” they are ignoring the ideas behind why these networks were setup and how you can use those ideas to help your business.

The top social networking websites such as Facebook and Myspace were founded as a way to stay in touch with friends and family and to meet new people online that all share the same ideas or interests. LinkedIn has a similar slant – it is great for entrepreneurs and professionals who want to keep track of their contacts for hiring or outsourcing. Flicker is a simple tool for sharing photos.

The success of social networks marks a dynamic shift in how people use the Internet. We are no longer using the internet merely to search for information but instead it has become an integral part of our daily routines and an essential part of staying in touch with friends, relatives and colleagues. People identify themselves as part of a group with similar likes and interests that draw them together, whether it be school, university, work, a hobby or some other interest group.

Social networks make viral marketing and word-of-mouth marketing much easier than before. The best use of social networks is not to make money ‘directly’ off members, but to harness their marketing potential and to use them to market your business. The best way to do that is to optimize your website, including the process of link building, for your target keywords.

Online social networks present an efficient platform for you to use in the spread of your marketing message. In addition, they are also a great tool for getting tons of visitors and thousands of page views to your site.

But be warned, it is easier to destroy than build. Be seen as a person of value & integrity, your network will grow and your business with it. Develop a negative reputation and all your efforts will come crashing down around you with a click of a mouse!

What this all means is that you need to devote more of your attention towards building your value and reputation, and then leverage the traffic you do receive from these sources. To do that, you should allow your visitors to create their own social network, or sub-network, centered on your niche topic. The power of this is staggering since social networks allow for multiple points of connections between almost anyone on Earth, giving them the ability to find, share, enjoy, and track anything and everything that interests them.

With social network marketing people choose to provide your link without being asked to do so, and places like del.ici.ous, Digg, Blogpulse, and Technorati give them the ability to do that. In offline terms, that means turning towards your friends and family to ask for their opinions. Online, it means turning towards a group of trusted people whose opinions and recommendations you value.

In fact, in lots of cases, you’ve probably done some research on your own, using the traditional search engine marketing model and then turned to a social network that you’re a part of to validate your findings and complete your research by getting their experiences and opinions about the topic. This is social network marketing at work in its purest form.

How Big Is The Social Network Market?

I was reading a 4th June 2010 report by Chris Crum in Webpronews with the headline “StumbleUpon Reaches 10 Million Users“. Congratulations StumbleUpon! Apparently they are having a party on June 17th to celebrate.

Actually it wasnt the headline that struck me nor the fact that StumbleUpon reported 118% growth since 2009, but what did strike me hard was this StatCounter chart that Chris included in his report.

There’s Facebook doing an imitation of a ski slope! No that wasnt it but that collapse in market share starting Dec 09 is dramatic … as is the StumbleUpon meteoric rise starting the same month. I’m not going to discuss the ins and outs of why Facebook members fled in droves for StumbleUpon and to a lesser extent Twitter but while I was doing my sums it hit me how massive these numbers were and this chart is only the Top 7!

I did a little research and came up with the following from Wikipedia … ok I know I tell my kids to be careful of Wiki when they are doing their homework but its a starting point and gives a picture of the scale of this think called Social Networking!

I counted … 69 social networking sites with memberships of over 1 Million each with a combined total membership of … 2.5 BILLION!!!

Can you imagine that … a potential market of 2.5 BILLION!!!

Yes, I know we cannot assume 2.5 billion memberships is 2.5 billion people and we definitely cannot assume that the majority of them would want your product … but hey, I’d be happy with a fraction of a percent of that number!

When is a Lead Not a Lead?

Since you have taken the time to pause for a few minutes to read my blog its safe to assume that you are online right now either involved in generating online business, or are looking for an online business. In either case I’m certain you’ve come across sites advertising to help you build your downline, or sell you leads, or give you free lists.

Lets just think about free lists for a moment. Why on earth would anyone give you a free list? If the list was of any value to an online entrepreneur they would be using the list themselves. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “the money is in the list”. In this case unfortunately the list is almost certainly worthless bait to attract you to some other promo and the chances are high that even if the email addresses are real the owners have no idea they are now on “your list”.

Are bought leads any better? My general rule is never to buy leads for the simple reason that the buyer knows nothing about the leads. Are they in the market for your product? Do they exist? Are they from your target region or age group? Simply buying a list of leads or paying for someone to point 200 leads at your website is no guarantee of converting leads to sales.

Would you advertise a new high street butcher in a magazine for vegetarians? Of course not!

A lead is a lead when the lead is in the market for your product or service and is already spending money for similar products or services.

Don’t waste money on free leads, be careful what you are getting should you buy leads, and above all research your target market segment to ensure your target audience is in the market for your products or services.

The best leads are those attracted to your products or services.
